Located inland, Lanzhou has a typical temperate, semi-arid continental monsoon climate with abundant sunshine and fewer rainfalls. Since Lanzhou is very dry, lip balm is necessary when you have a trip in Lanzhou. You’d better pack a warm coat in your travel bag because the temperature will drop low in evening. It has an annual precipitation of 250-350 mm, mainly from June to September. The yearly average temperature is 9.1C.
The best season to visit is usually from May to October when the temperature is most suitable. If local folk customs,like festivals,appeal to you, winter can also be a good tourist season.
Lanzhou’s spring is ephemeral with changeable weather in March and April. It is the high season for dust weather. During this season, the air outside is full of the smell of loess, which decreases the visibility. This kind of weather usually lasts for 2-3 days for one time.
Summer is short but not too hot with an average temperature of 22.4C. The highest temperature can reach 40℃. Actually, the hot weather above 35℃ just lasts for less than 10 days, better than many other cities in China.
Autumn sees a rapid decrease in temperature. Since middle September to November, it is usually sunny in daytime, and a passing shower in evening. Winter is long and chilly with an average temperature of -7.3C. The lowest temperature in winter is usually under -14℃. In winter, a warm coat, scarf, gloves, hat, and boots are needed.
